How do ballplayers fare in different ball-strike counts? Is there a substantial variation in batting and slugging percentages as one goes deeper in the count? In which counts does the batter or pitcher gain a significant advantage?
Revisiting the Retrosheet Event Files after extensively utilizing them throughout the “Taking the Extra Base” and “BABIP by Location” chapters in “Hardball Retroactive“, I scrutinized the logs for stimulating statistics. Realizing the data set contained comprehensive ball-strike information for the past three decades (1988-2017), I commenced the crunching of numbers to reveal single-season and career-bests by batters and pitchers in the various counts (with the caveat of small sample sizes) while assessing trends over a 30-year timeframe.
Results are grouped into three categories:
Hitters Counts (1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, 3-1) – the odds are in the hitter’s favor due to the pitcher’s risk of awarding a base on balls or falling further behind in the count
Pitchers Counts (0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 2-2) – the odds are in the pitcher’s favor due to the hitter’s risk of striking out or falling further behind in the count
Neutral Counts (0-0, 1-1, 3-2) – neither party holds the advantage
Batting average is on the rise across the board since 1988 with the exception of two-strike counts. The trend among 0-2 counts remained fairly static over three decades while the data implies a decline in hitting when balls are put into play within a 1-2, 2-2 or 3-2 count during the same time frame.

Note: the Ball-Strike Count Matrix tables indicate the batting averages and slugging percentages over a 30-year period (1988-2017) in the various ball-strike states. The upper-left corner represents a ball-strike count of zero balls / zero strikes and the lower-right corner signifies a count of three balls / two strikes.
Hitters Count
Outcomes in “Hitters Counts” reveal two striking escalations. Spanning three seasons from 1992 to 1994, batting average in “Hitters Counts” vaulted from .317 to .341 while slugging and HR/AB percentages soared from .491 to .574 and 3.3% to 4.9%, respectively. After remaining fairly static for the following two decades, another seismic event occurred as slugging ascended from .551 to .631 covering a four-year period (2014-17). Home runs per at-bat scaled from 4.3% to 6.4% and batting average peaked at .353 in 2016.
A concise record of players thriving in “Hitters Counts” includes Miguel Sano (.460 BA, .856 SLG), Shin-Soo Choo (.454 BA), Chris Davis (.879 SLG, 12.3% HR/AB), Kris Bryant (.873 SLG) and Giancarlo Stanton (.864 SLG, 12% HR/AB). Mark McGwire places among the top 10 in HR/AB percentage in all of the ball-strike counts from 0-0 through 2-2, topping three of the lists. “Big Mac” also paces all qualifiers across the three distinct categories of “Hitters Count” (13.7%, 158 HR), “Pitchers Count” (6.3%, 143 HR) and Neutral Count (10.8%, 230 HR) despite the omission of his record-breaking 1987 rookie season.
Opposing batters feasted on Rick Krivda’s offerings after he fell behind in the count (.471 BAA, .929 SLGA). Among active moundsmen, Masahiro Tanaka (.741 SLGA) routinely gets tagged for extra bases in this scenario. On the other hand, Roger Mason (.231 BAA) and Larry Andersen (.317 SLGA) savored the opportunity. Bruce Ruffin buckled down in “Hitters Counts”, permitting round-trippers only 1.6% of the time.
28 qualifying sluggers belted four-baggers in at least 10% of their plate appearances after connecting with a 1-0 delivery, led by Mark McGwire’s 62 jacks (13.6%). Gerald Young (.215 BA / .253 SLG) trails all batters making contact when ahead 1-0 in the count while Bryce Harper (#1, 2010) alights atop the charts with a .506 BA (91/180) and a .978 SLG.
Terry Leach is the lone pitcher (minimum 150 AB) to hold the opposition without a home run in a 1-0 count. The sidearming right-hander’s .328 SLGA also leads the pack. Esmil Rogers played in parts of 7 MLB campaigns, recording 19 wins and a 5.59 ERA while yielding the worst BAA among qualifiers in 1-0 (.451) and 1-1 (.419) conditions. Keith Foulke limited opposing batsmen to a .237 BAA under comparable circumstances.
J.J. Hardy (.247 BA) and Brent Mayne (.400 SLG) scuffled in a scenario that typically favors the hitter. Austin Jackson (.516 BA) possesses tunnel vision at the dish in a 2-0 count. Likewise Mike Stanley (.910 SLG) and Jim Thome (.905 SLG) devoured deliveries from hurlers facing the prospect of grooving a pitch in the zone versus a three-ball, no strike situation. Mark McGwire clubbed circuit clouts in 14.7% of his plate appearances upon connecting with a 2-0 delivery.
Chris Hammond permitted one dinger in a 2-0 count over the course of 14 seasons in the big leagues. Mike Leake fashioned a .251 BAA after staking his counterpart to a 2-0 advantage while batters teeded off against Mark Hendrickson (.416 BAA) and Eric Milton (.873 SLGA).
Chris Archer, Gerrit Cole, Andrew Miller and Joe Nathan yield batting averages above the .400 mark when the batter makes contact in a 2-1 count. Vance Worley trails all qualifiers with a .428 BAA after putting the ball in play on a 2-1 pitch while lumberjacks thumped southpaw Chris Capuano (.779 SLGA) over 12 seasons. Alternatively, Randy Tomlin permitted no long balls in 159 at-bats during a 2-1 offering.
Cecil Fielder, two-time AL home run champion (1990-91), places first among all qualifiers in the past three decades with 14.3% HR/AB subsequent to working the count in his favor at two balls and one strike. Felix Fermin labored to a .205 BA and a .228 SLG while Josh Hamilton (.481 BA) tops a list of 39 batsmen with a .400 BA or better. Chris Davis aka “Crush” slugged .906 through the 2017 campaign in a 2-1 count.
Spanning three decades of event data, a mere 328 at-bats are registered per year as a result of batted balls in the 3-0 state. The offense achieves a major boost as demonstrated by the cumulative .374 BA, .736 SLG and 8.8% HR/AB.
Of interest despite the small sample size – batters who put the ball in play against Randy D. Johnson on a 3-0 count rapped 10 safeties in 16 at-bats (.625 BA). Aaron Harang (.158 BAA), Andy Benes (.235 SLG) and Justin Verlander (.235 SLG) maintained their composure in comparable conditions.
Nomar Garciaparra and Jose Hernandez (.706 BA, 1.824 SLG) swatted five big-flies apiece in 17 at-bats for a 29.4% HR/AB ratio subsequent to starting a plate appearance with three consecutive balls. Jim Thome clubbed 17 round-trippers (27.4%) over 62 at-bats under the same circumstances. Nelson R. Cruz ambushes 3-0 deliveries (.750, 15/20 with 5 HR). Andruw Jones (.038, 1/26), James Loney (.050, 1/20) and Anthony Rizzo (.062, 1/16) fail to seize the opportunity despite having the upper hand.
Opposing batsmen pounce on Max Scherzer’s 3-1 offerings, boasting a .516 BA (47/91) with 10 circuit clouts! Scherzer’s 1.033 SLGA in this ball-strike state is the worst among all qualifiers in any count (minimum 150 AB). Rick Porcello yields a combined .468 BA (88/188) in 3-0 and 3-1 situations. Zane Smith surrended one gopher ball in 131 batted balls, resisting the urge to concede the confrontation. Jack Armstrong (.192 BAA) fought back under comparable circumstances.
Jerry Hairston Jr. (.207 BA), Otis Nixon (.267 SLG) and Mike LaValliere (.291 SLG) fared the poorest among qualifiers possessing a 3-1 advantage in the count. Conversely, Billy “Country Breakfast” Butler (.492 BA) and Richie Sexson (1.049 SLG) seized the opportunity to buttress their production. Kevin “World” Mitchell (1.033 SLG, 17.6% HR/AB) bashed 16 four-base knocks after working a plate appearance into a 3-1 state.
Pitchers Count
Pitchers maintained the upper hand against the opposition in “Pitchers Counts”, coercing sub-.200 batting averages in each of the past six seasons (2012-2017) after hitters peaked in 2006 with an aggregate .212 mark. The substantial downward trend in slugging percentage is clearly defined as the .569 SLG generated in 1994 far outpaces the results two decades later (.466 SLG). Nevertheless the emphasis on launch angles may be contributing to the perceptible uptick in home runs per at-bat from 1992 (1.3% HR/AB) to 2017 (2.3% HR/AB).
Tony Gwynn aka “Mr. Padre” (.313 BA) is the sole qualifier to sustain a .300 BA after falling behind in the count. Luis Polonia (.272 BA) ranks second, followed by three players at .269 (Brian Harper, Dustin Pedroia, Ichiro Suzuki). The top sluggers in “Pitchers Counts” encompass Gary Sanchez (.466 SLG), Albert Pujols (.456 SLG) and Barry Bonds (.455 SLG, 5.2% HR/AB). Mark McGwire (6.3% HR/AB) ranks ahead of Bonds in the HR/AB department, with the improbable Marcus Thames (5%) claiming third place.
Carl Edwards (.080 BAA, .138 SLGA), Dellin Betances (.085 BAA, .124 SLGA) and Craig Kimbrel (.098 BAA, .141 SLGA) baffle the opposition after taking the upper hand. On the contrary, Doug Sisk (.320 BAA) and Chris C. George (.309 BAA, .536 SLGA) flopped under favorable circumstances. Jay Powell permitted a mere 3 dingers in 914 AB (0.3%) when contact was made in a “Pitchers Count”.
Welington Castillo produces at a .426 clip after falling behind 0-1 in the count while twelve other batsmen surpass the .400 mark. Rob Deer (12%) sits atop the HR/AB percentage chart with 21 long distance dedications in 175 at-bats. Mark McGwire, Mike Napoli and J.P. Arencibia managed to go deep at least 10% of the time upon contact with a 0-1 delivery.
Dennis Rasmussen only allowed one round-tripper in 256 at-bats with the count in an 0-1 state. At the other end of the spectrum, Christian Bergman allowed 9 gopher balls out of the 91 balls in play under the identical circumstances. Tony Watson (.221 BAA) tops a list of two dozen hurlers with a .250 or better BAA (0-1). Jeff Brantley saved 172 big-league contests in a 14-year career but the opposition solved his 0-1 offerings at a .415 clip, worst among all qualifiers.
Pitchers gain a distinct advantage subsequent to throwing two consecutive strikes at the start of any given plate appearance. Batting averages drop precipitously in an 0-2 state (from .316 to .156) while slugging percentages are radically reduced (from .476 to .225). This represents the greatest change in BA and SLG between ball-strike states.
Juan Pierre and Brian Harper (.268) take top honors with respect to safely reaching base in an 0-2 count. Travis Snider (#1, 2006) raised the white flag when confronted with an 0-2 scenario, posting an .071 BA (11/156). Marcus Thames mashed 11 taters (6.4%) joining Kevin Mitchell and Mark McGwire as the trio of batsmen clearing the fences at least 5% of the time after falling two strikes behind.
Aroldis Chapman (.072) leads a cadre of six relievers with a sub-.100 career BAA subsequent to gaining an 0-2 advantage. Hector Noesi trails all qualifiers with a .285 BAA and a .462 SLGA. 64 hurlers prevented the opposition from leaving the yard provided at least 150 at-bats in 0-2 counts.
No batter in the past three decades sustained a .300 BA after putting the ball in play during 1-2 counts (minimum 150 AB). Tony Gwynn paces all hitters in this circumstance with .291 BA. Jason Lane clobbered 9 moon-shots (5.8% HR/AB) and slugged .404 in a 1-2 count. Melvin Nieves (.056 BA, 13/232) and Delino D. DeShields (.080 BA, 14/176) essentially disintegrate under pressure.
Dellin Betances (.038 BAA, 10/260) and Craig Kimbrel (.068 BAA, 24/355) flummox the competition when they hold the 1-2 advantage. The other end of the spectrum features Tampa Bay’s top selection in the 2001 Amateur Draft, Dewon Brazelton (.272 BAA) along with Phillies’ portsider Adam Morgan (.460 SLGA).
Tony Gwynn (.314, 188/598) is the only hitter in the past 3 decades to eclipse the .300 mark in a 2-2 count (minimum 150 AB). Jose Abreu (.463 SLG) holds a slim edge over Barry Bonds (.458), Nolan Arenado (.446) and Kevin Mench (.442). Steve Balboni platooned at first base and designated hitter in the latter half of his career. “Bye Bye” belted 10 big-flies across 154 at-bats since 1988 in a 2-2 situation, exceeding all big leaguers with a 6.5 HR/AB%. In a career spanning 22 seasons, Ken Griffey Jr. (#1, 1987) left the yard 74 times for a HR/AB rate of 5.5% when the opposing hurler possessed a 2-2 advantage. Michael A. Taylor (.090 BA, .117 SLG) trails in both categories.
Fireballing relievers dominate the leaderboards for the 2-2 state led by Dellin Betances (.087 BAA), Cody Allen (.089 BAA) and Craig Kimbrel (.090 BAA). Dave Eiland (.313 BAA, .500 SLGA) in the same count correlates with his overall record (12-27, 5.74 ERA). Jose R. Santiago endured a similar fate over 229 relief appearances (.311 BAA, .500 SLGA).
Neutral Count
Batting average in “Neutral Counts” improved marginally over the past 30 years as hitters eclipsed the .300 mark in eleven consecutive seasons (1999-2009). Slugging percentage transcended the .500 plateau in 2017. Home runs per at-bat soared from 3% in 2014 to 4.5% in 2017.
Ben Paulsen (.408 BA, 64/157), Norris Hopper (.386 BA, 61/158) and Trey Mancini (.371 BA, .697 SLG) assert the top three slots among all qualifiers in “Neutral Counts”. Mark McGwire (10.8%, 230 HR) achieved the highest home run per at-bat ratio while Khris Davis (.712 SLG, 10.6% HR/AB) and Giancarlo Stanton (.688 SLG, 9.4% HR/AB) achieved the best slugging percentage along with Mancini. Two backstops posted sub-.200 batting averages in “Neutral Counts” – Jody Davis (.195 BA since ’88) and Lou Marson (.198 BA).
Larry Andersen limited his rivals to 4 taters in 543 at-bats (0.7%) within “Neutral Counts”. The lone qualifier under these conditions to maintain a sub-.200 BAA is Roberto Osuna (.193 BAA). Akinori Otsuka (.202 BAA, .258 SLGA) and Esmerling Vasquez (.214 BAA, .291 SLG) notched the top positions in SLGA. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Josh Banks (.413 BAA, .700 SLGA), Chris Bootcheck (.404 BAA) and Scott Klingenbeck (.743 SLGA) were utterly torched when the count was not in anyone’s favor.
Thirty-four batters composed a lifetime .400 BA or better when they connect on the initial offering. Jack Cust claims the high water mark at .440 while Rich Gedman’s .199 BA mirrors his .206 clip as a backup catcher over the final half-decade (1988-1992) of his career. Cesar A. Hernandez (.432) leads all active batters through 2017 with Jonathan Villar, Paul Goldschmidt, Christian Yelich and Corey Seager rounding out the top-five. Khris Davis tops the home run percentage leaderboards at 14.1% (38 HR) with comparably named colleague Chris Davis wielding the runner-up slot at 13.7%.
Pitching exclusively in relief since the first year of our study, southpaw Rick Honeycutt (.227) paces the Majors in BAA, followed closely by Felix Rodriguez (.229). Aaron Sanchez is the active leader at .231. Lucas Harrell maintains the worst BAA in an 0-0 count at .419, with nine others serving up four base knocks for every ten at-bats. Covering 95 outings (54 starts) over the last four years of his MLB career, Mike LaCoss yielded only one circuit clout in 297 first-pitch batted balls.
Danny Tartabull secures high honors with a .424 BA upon putting the ball in play during a 1-1 count. Mark McGwire leads all qualifiers in HR/AB at 14.4% and places runner-up to Giancarlo Stanton with a .880 SLG. “Bigfoot” slugs .882 in a 1-1 situation and swats a big fly in one out of eight at-bats (12.5%). Billy Ripken (.214 BA, .256 SLG) and Chad Kreuter (.214 BA) settled at the bottom of the rankings.Tom Henke outshines the competition with a .212 BAA in 1-1 situations while Eric Show (.229 BAA, .303 SLGA) fashioned the best SLGA under analogous circumstances. Challengers pummeled Esmil Rogers (.419 BAA), Nick Martinez (.728 SLGA), Drew Hutchison (.712 SLGA) and Edward Mujica (.709 SLGA). With the count even at one ball and one strike, Jim R. Johnson and Terry Leach barred batsmen from dialing long distance in 243 and 151 at-bats, respectively.
Tony Gwynn produced a .352 BA in a full count since 1988, which is not unexpected given his lifetime .338 BA. Surprise entries among the top of the slugging charts include Eduardo Escobar (.588 SLG), Stephen Vogt (.552 SLG), Kevin Maas (.538 SLG), and Alejandro De Aza (.527 SLG). Furthermore Maas (8.2%) and Vogt 8% place first and second in the HR/AB charts. Aaron Hicks (.133 BA, .179 SLG) ranks worst among qualifiers (minimum 150 AB) when confronted with a 3-2 delivery.
Rob “Nasty Boy” Dibble (.111 BAA, .150 SLGA) and Carlos Marmol (.124 BAA, .176 SLGA) flourished in full-count scenarios. Five qualifiers never allowed a gopher ball on a 3-2 offering: Clay Hensley, Jimmy Jones, A.J. Ramos, Bobby Thigpen and Brad Ziegler. Mike Foltynewicz (.346 BAA) and Butch Henry (.331 BAA, .604 SLGA) registered unsatisfactory grades in 3-2 situations.

Don Daglow (Intellivision World Series Major League Baseball, Earl Weaver Baseball, Tony LaRussa Baseball) contributed the foreword for Hardball Retrospective. The foreword and preview of my book are accessible here.
“Hardball Retrospective – Addendum 2014 to 2016” supplements my research for Hardball Retrospective, providing retroactive standings based on Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Win Shares (WS) for each “original” team over the past three seasons (2014-2016). Team totals from 2010 – 2013 are included for reference purposes. “Addendum” is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com.
“Hardball Retroactive”, published in June 2018, is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com. A cross-section of essays that I penned for Seamheads.com along with my Baseball Analytics blog spanning nearly a decade touching on subjects including “Taking the Extra Base”, “General Manager Scorecard”, “Worst Trades”, “BABIP By Location” and “Baseball Birthplaces and the Retro World Baseball Classic”. Rediscover your favorite hardball arcade and simulations in “Play Retro Baseball Video Games In Your Browser” or take a deep dive into every franchise’s minor league successes and failures in relation to their major league operations in “Minors vs. Majors”.
“Hardball Architects” examines the trades, free agent acquisitions, draft picks and other transactions for the 30 Major League Baseball franchises, divided into a 2-volume set (American League and National League). All key moves are scrutinized for every team and Sabermetric principles are applied to the roster construction throughout the lifetime of the organization to encapsulate the hits and misses by front office executives. “Volume 1 – American League Teams” is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com. “Volume 2 – National League Teams” is tentatively scheduled for publication in the spring of 2022.
