Minors vs. Majors: The Top Minor League Pitchers in the Expansion Era

Derek Bain — Mon, 30 Apr 2018 16:05:57 +0000

In the process of conducting research for the “Minors vs. Majors” chapter for my upcoming book “Hardball Retroactive”, I compiled a database encompassing every player-season for the past 55 years (1963-2017) corresponding with the reorganization and reclassification of the minor leagues prior to the start of the 1963 season. Computing the statistics for each individual and generating a subset of pitchers having at least 150 innings pitched through the duration of their minor league careers, I added columns for minor league Wins, Losses, Saves, ERA, WHIP, BB9 and SO9 along with the basic formula for Fielding Independent Pitching (see Terminology section below). I generated a chart comprised of the top minor league pitchers in the expansion era supplemented by the career leaders in the standard percentage categories (ERA, WHIP, BB9 and SO9). 326 pitchers possessing a minor league career FIP below 2.75 are the primary focus of my assessment. The complete list can be found here:

Terminology

FIP – Fielding Independent Pitching – “Fielding Independent Pitching converts a pitcher’s three true outcomes into an earned run average-like number. The formula is (13*HR+3*(HBP+BB)-2*K)/IP, plus a constant (usually around 3.2) to put it on the same scale as earned run average.

FIP is a component ERA inspired by the work of Voros McCracken on defense-independent pitching statistics, but has become more widely used because of the ease of computation – it requires only four easily-found box score stats, uses only basic arithmetic operations and has four easily-memorized constants. It was conceived of by both Tom Tango and Clay Dreslough, the latter of who called it Defense-Independent Component ERA.” (definition courtesy of Baseball Prospectus Glossary).

((13*HR+3*(HBP+BB)-2*K)/IP)+3.2)

FIP_MLB – pitcher’s Major League FIP through 2017 (minimum 150 IP in the Majors)

Assessment

I divided the pitchers achieving a FIP of 2.75 or below into three classifications. Pitchers owning a 2.50 FIP or lower in their minor league careers encompass the High Honors list while hurlers in the 2.51 to 2.75 range are designated in the Honors section. Individuals who qualify based on pitching at least 150 innings as a minor leaguer but failing to reach the same mark as a Major Leaguer place within the Incomplete category. For the sake of comparison, Clayton Kershaw is the active leader in FIP_MLB (as of January 1, 2018) among starters with a 2.60 mark while Craig Kimbrel tops relievers at 1.81.

High Honors

Based on the criteria outlined above, 109 pitchers compiled a FIP of 2.50 or better during their minor league careers. The group includes Hall of Famer Don Sutton, Most Valuable Players (Roger Clemens and Clayton Kershaw), Cy Young award winners (Max Scherzer along with Clemens and Kershaw) and 2013 NL Rookie of the Year Jose D. Fernandez. Fireballing relief ace David Robertson tops the FIP and ERA leader boards. Cole Hamels places runner-up with a 1.47 ERA during his minor league career. Bob Lee merited an appearance in the Midsummer Classic in 1965 as the Angels closer notched a career-best 23 saves to complement a 1.92 ERA. Four-time All-Star Cole Hamels paced the NL with a 1.082 WHIP in 2008 and claimed World Series MVP honors as he led the Phillies to the championship. 2003 WS MVP award winner Josh Beckett (20-7, 3.27) finished runner-up in the 2007 AL Cy Young balloting. Luis Severino (14-6, 2.98) struck out 10.7 batters per nine innings and placed third in the 2017 AL Cy Young vote. Rick Ankiel, runner-up in the 2000 NL Rookie of the Year race, returned to the big leagues as an outfielder in 2007 after struggling to find the strike zone since the 2000 postseason.

Honors

The second tier features Hall of Famers Bert Blyleven and Nolan Ryan, 1971 AL MVP and Cy Young honoree Vida Blue along with relief ace and 2011 NL Rookie of the Year Craig Kimbrel. “Dirty Craig” ranks second to Jack Leathersich with 14.4 strikeouts per nine innings. 1971 NL All-Star Don Wilson compiled 104 victories with a 3.15 ERA until his untimely passing in January 1975 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Southpaw Matt Moore (17-4, 3.29) achieved All-Star status in 2013 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. Ian Kennedy (21-4, 2.88) placed fourth in the 2011 NL Cy Young race while topping the Senior Circuit in wins. Tom “Flash” Gordon (17-9, 3.64) finished second in the 1989 AL Rookie of the Year voting while working in a variety of roles for the Royals. Noah Syndergaard entered the 2018 campaign with 10.3 SO/9, an ERA of 2.89 and a WHIP of 1.099 in 61 MLB starts. Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13) garnered the NL ERA title and finished third in the Cy Young balloting in 2016 as the Cubs captured their first World Series trophy since 1908.

Incomplete

The Minor League hurlers classified in the subsequent table can be grouped into four subcategories: prospects who are on the cusp of the Majors, phenoms who briefly reached the big leagues but failed to register at least 150 MLB innings pitched, individuals whose careers were either abbreviated or ended due to injury, and ballplayers who generated impressive numbers in the Minors but retired or left pro ball to pursue a different career path. Active pitchers that are slated to arrive in the Major Leagues in the near future include Dylan Cease, Brent Lee Honeywell, Mitch Keller, AJ Puk and Sixto Sanchez. San Diego reliever Kyle McGrath currently wields the best WHIP (0.829) and tenth-best ERA (1.60) spanning the last 55 minor league campaigns.

About the Author

I am a New Jersey native with a passion for baseball, statistics, computers and video games who enjoys spending quality time with his family.

“Hardball Retrospective” is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com. Supplemental Statistics, Charts and Graphs along with a discussion forum are offered at TuataraSoftware.com.

Don Daglow (Intellivision World Series Major League Baseball, Earl Weaver Baseball, Tony LaRussa Baseball) contributed the foreword for Hardball Retrospective. The foreword and preview of my book are accessible here.

“Hardball Retrospective – Addendum 2014 to 2016” supplements my research for Hardball Retrospective, providing retroactive standings based on Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Win Shares (WS) for each “original” team over the past three seasons (2014-2016). Team totals from 2010 – 2013 are included for reference purposes. “Addendum” is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com.

“Hardball Retroactive”, published in June 2018, is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com. A cross-section of essays that I penned for Seamheads.com along with my Baseball Analytics blog spanning nearly a decade touching on subjects including “Taking the Extra Base”, “General Manager Scorecard”, “Worst Trades”, “BABIP By Location” and “Baseball Birthplaces and the Retro World Baseball Classic”. Rediscover your favorite hardball arcade and simulations in “Play Retro Baseball Video Games In Your Browser” or take a deep dive into every franchise’s minor league successes and failures in relation to their major league operations in “Minors vs. Majors”.

“Hardball Architects” examines the trades, free agent acquisitions, draft picks and other transactions for the 30 Major League Baseball franchises, divided into a 2-volume set (American League and National League). All key moves are scrutinized for every team and Sabermetric principles are applied to the roster construction throughout the lifetime of the organization to encapsulate the hits and misses by front office executives. “Volume 1 – American League Teams” is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com. “Volume 2 – National League Teams” is tentatively scheduled for publication in the spring of 2022.
